For those who are curious: the Public Radio Talent Quest announced their 10 semi-finalists for the next round of judging this week. And no, I was not one of them...

(insert dejected pout here)

Seriously, congratulations to all the winners - they're a very talented crew, and I expect the ultimate winner will have quite a successful career in radio. I must say though: I was somewhat surprised that apparently music shows were not as heavily considered as the talk or entertainment categories - of the 10 entries proceeding to the next round, only one is a music show... But then again, it is Public Radio, and talk is more the standard in their case. Needless to say, I'll be rooting pretty heavily for Komal, the only music category representative to make it through to the next round.

Oh well - nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thanks to all who voted, and a special tip of the black baseball cap to fellow KOOP DJ Khotan, who made the list of 100 top popular vote receivers. Way to go, girl...

For those who haven't heard, Public Radio Exchange is holding a talent contest along the lines of "American Idol;" the winner will be given the chance to host a nationally syndicated program. There will be 10 semi-finalists for the first round: nine picked by the judges, and one picked by popular votes cast on their website...

It's 2006 - I was promised playlists... Where are my playlists?

Yes, well... The truth is: the temporary studio conditions have somewhat limited my ability to properly notate everything in the heat of the moment. Between the phone calls, the station paperwork, and the occasionally finicky temporary equipment, I've made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend playlist postings. It's a matter of priorites, essentially... As always, feel free to contact me via email - I'm happy to answer any questions as best I can. I hope to resume posting soon - stay tuned.

KOOP Austin resumed broadcasting as of this morning... Much respect to all who worked tirelessly to procure not only a temporary facility, but the required equipment (without which we can't really be an FM radio station). I would emphasize the struggle is *not* over - KOOP is still facing relocation to a permanent space (not a cheap endeavor), and we will be having multiple benefits and opportunities to give everyone a chance to contribute - see our station website at koop.org for more details... But hey: at least now you can stay tuned to 91.7FM to hear all about it - see you on Sunday.

FIRE! Part II (aka: deja vu all over again)

It seems like a bad dream (or a bad sitcom), but: the already damaged KOOP radio facilities suffered catastrophic damage during a massive 4-alarm blaze early this morning. Once again, while the fire did not originate within the KOOP facilities, it didn't take long for the conflagration to spread... The station brass is coming up with contingency plans to return to the airwaves as we speak; until then, KVRX will be broadcasting in our stead. FIRE! (aka: what the $*#!$?)

For those who haven't heard: the building which houses KOOP radio suffered significant damage during a fire that broke out early morning on Friday, January 6th... This has understandably caused us to cease broadcasting for a short time as we undergo our recovery process. But have no fear: our equipment is intact & we fully intend to be back on the air early this week, so Jamaican Gold will return next Sunday. Thanks to all for the kind comments and concerns, and a big tip of the baseball cap to both the Austin Police & Fire Departments (for obvious reasons), as well as our sister station KVRX for covering the programming as we get everything back in order...
